Partial ear amputations occur commonly and are a result of many types of injuries; for example motor vehicle accidents, burns and bites. It is possible to reconstruct partial ear injuries using similar techniques to microtia. The technique and the number of stages required for reconstruction depends on the amount of tissue loss and is individualized to the patient. The surgery is done no earlier than at least one year following the injury.
