::  Introduction

Drs. Kasrai and Fisher believe in a thorough assessment and treatment plan that begins as early as possible. It is recommended that the initial consultation take place in early childhood. This helps to ensure all the necessary specialists are involved, and that the values, goals and needs of the child and family can be integrated into every stage of the treatment plan. It is most important that the child be willing and wanting to improve the appearance of the affected ear.

::  The First Visit

The initial meeting with Drs. Kasrai and Fisher begins with an in-depth assessment of the childs health, and the degree of microtia. Both physicians participate in the family meeting and other specialists may be brought in to assist in thoroughly identifying the needs of each child. As part of this first visit, photographs and measurements will be taken which will serve as a reference for planning the eventual surgery. Other tests, such as x-rays or CT scans may also be performed to ensure a detailed understanding of the childs condition. Parents are advised to bring any of the childs available health or surgical records to ensure a complete grasp of the childs health issues.

Both Dr. Kasrai and Dr. Fisher will discuss their findings with the family and set out a planned approach for future visits and the surgical procedure. At every step, the family is fully briefed as to what it can expect in terms of treatment outcome and ongoing care. Education is an important part of this meeting so that families are well prepared. The doctors will discuss in detail their assessment of the type of surgery required. They will outline a treatment timeframe and address all questions from the child and family members. The entire health care team is involved in setting an individualized plan of care, and further appointments are planned as needed.
